Mr.Maru: That's a nice suit Sparky.
Sparky: Thank you.  I bought it yesterday.
Mr.Maru: Why are you dressed nicely?  It's the middle of summer.
Sparky: Well, since we have this weekly blog series are statuses have improved.  We need to start looking nicer.
Mr.Maru: I don't think so Sparky.  We don't have that many readers.
Sparky: Yeah, we do.  The fans like us.
Mr.Maru: Really?  Do you think I should buy a tie?
Sparky: Yes, of course! I think people will laugh at you if your dog is better-dressed than you.

What is plural of status?  Is the plural of status, statuses or states or neither?  Let's talk about some examples and explain the rules for this word.

Mr.Maru: Hey sparky, what are you going to do this weekend.
Sparky: I don't know. I think I'm going to eat large amounts of bacon.
Mr.Maru: Where are you going to get this bacon?
Sparky: You are going to buy it of course.
Mr.Maru: I don't think so.
Sparky: I guess the newspaper is not going to be in one piece then. And you can forget about your shoes.
Mr.Maru: All right, I'll buy you bacon.

What are the differences between 'be going to' and 'will'?  When do we use will?  When do we use 'be going to'?  There are a few basic guidelines for each.

Using Video Games to Learn a Language

I just recently got back from Techday, an event that is hosted by the local Osaka JALT.  What seemed very interesting to me was the use of more and more video games in learning contexts.  There was a presentation on a flash game that was being re-written to be more friendly to learners of English.  It seemed like a great idea because they can practice listening to the dialog and practice their comprehension.  The project hadn't been completed yet, but the finished product was to include the ability to even go back and re-listen to parts of the dialog to comprehend it more.

Mr.Maru: Are you still watching the World Cup?
Sparky: Yeah. It's the quarterfinals.
Mr.Maru: You have to study though.
Sparky: I don't have to study. I'll pass the test.
Mr.Maru: I don't think so. You should study.
Sparky: I'll do it later. You must make me dinner now.
Mr.Maru: I don't think so.
Sparky: You're my master. You have to make me food.
Mr.Maru: I'll do it later.

When do you use have to and when do you use must?  What is the difference between have to and must?  Let's talk about some examples and some rules for these two words.

Sparky: I have built a miracle.
Mr.Maru: I really don't think so.
Sparky: No look! It is the 8th marvel of the world.
Mr.Maru: It's a giant pyramid made out of dog biscuits.
Sparky: Exactly. It is a wonder of engineering.
Mr.Maru: I hope you can eat all those before it rains.

What is the difference between a marvel, a wonder or a miracle?  Can we use them for every situation?  Let's take a look at some examples.
