Facebook is a monster!

If you don't know what Facebook is, crawl out from under your rock and join the rest of the world.  There are now over 200 million Facebook users.  No joke, my 86 year old grandma has a profile.  I hope that if you are reading this you have one as well. If you don't, get started right after reading this article.

Today is an age of social media, but so many people don't know how to use it correctly and to their benefit.   Facebook can be an extremely awesome tool to connect with new friends, stay connected to old, distant ones, and network.  Unfortunately, networking properly has eluded so many people.  Facebook can be a powerful way to find new jobs and in your case, find more students.

So here are a few tips on how to look more professional.

  • Adjust your settings

I personally know a hiring recruiter who looks up potential employees on Facebook and if he sees incriminating evidence of them he doesn't give them the call back.  So the lesson learned, don't post pics of yourself getting drunk and partying to the dawn's early light for the whole world to see.  You can still post them, but change your privacy settings.  You can do this by clicking on "Settings" in the top right of your page.  Here you can adjust who can see what on your profile.  Let the partying pics only post for certain friends.  I also recommend making your profile public.  You can do this in the same section.  You allow the public to view your profile.  The cool thing is you can control what they see.  For example let everyone see your work experience and school experience.  It's a great way to network or get hired.

  • Beef up the profile

This is for the serious Facebook user.  Here is a cool article for making your profile a little cooler.  It has 10 tips for the experienced user.  It has everything from editing your profile pic to changing your profile url.  Definitely worth checking out.

  • Make a company profile

This is for the entrepreneurial teachers that have their own school.  Facebook is a great marketing tool.  This gives your school a public face and an awesome way to network with other teachers and students.  It also gives you the opportunity for updating all of your followers on the latest news going on.  You can incorporate games, homework, and social networking events.

Now you know the latest, so what are you waiting for?  Get cracking on your awesome Facebook page.
