Although there are several teacher-student matching services that can be used to gain more private students, they can be quite costly and do not always guarantee results. Teachers who are interested in marketing themselves to potential students may find that it is easier and more fruitful to use some of the free tools available on the web:

1. TeachStreet - TeachStreet was designed specifically for teachers who want to grow their student base. Within this site, teachers can create an in-depth online profile, market their business, and connect with new students. The site also allows teachers to share expertise through articles, lesson plans, and online reviews.

2. YouTube - YouTube has become one of the quickest and easiest ways to share yourself with the world. Teachers can use the site to post video resumes, class information, promotional materials, and other items designed to attract new students.

3. TeacherTube - This YouTube style site was created specifically for teachers. It can be used to share instructional videos and other educational materials. Teachers who want to promote their classes online can create a few sample videos on TeacherTube and link to them from a website, blog, or newsletter.

4. Applebatch - Joining a teacher community is a great way to grow your professional network. You never know what sorts of opportunities may arise when talking to other teachers. Applebatch is an excellent community for K-12 teachers who want to connect with administrators and other educators. The site provides a place to network and plenty of job search help.

5. The Apple - Like Applebatch, the Apple provides career resources and a place to network online. The Apple recently partnered with Monster to provide teachers with even more job postings and career advice. Other site resources include private messaging and an interactive map directory of in-demand subjects by area. Both current and future teachers are welcome at The Apple.

6. WiZiQ - WiZiQ is a unique web-based platform that offers a state-of-the-art virtual classroom, tools for lesson creation, and course publishing materials. The platform also provides in-depth articles and other tips for teachers who want to use WiZiQ to market themselves, build their education network, and attract new private students.

7. Wordpress - Blogging is a great way for teachers to market themselves and build an online presence. Wordpress is easily the most widely used publishing platform in the blogosphere. It is free to use and includes all sorts of handy features as well as excellent customer support.

8. PodBean - Podcasts are another good way for teachers to market themselves and attract new students. At PodBean, podcasts can be published in three easy steps without any special tech knowledge. PodBean also offers tools to market podcasts and attract listeners.

9. VerticalResponse - Businesses have been using email marketing for years to draw in new customers. Teachers can also use this promotional tool to attract new students. One of the better self-service direct marketing systems available today is VerticalResponse. This system makes it easy to build, send, and track email newsletters and direct mail postcards. Teachers can try VerticalResponse free for 30 days to see if the service works for them.

10. SlideShare - Online profiles on LinkedIn and other professional networking sites help job seekers find new employers, but they don't always do a lot for teachers who are trying to find new students. SlideShare, on the other hand, is directed at the educational community. Teachers can use this site to present online portfolios, sample lesson plans, and other presentations geared toward learners and academics.
