Sparky: Welcome home Mr.Maru!

Mr.Maru: Hey Sparky, did you have a good day?

Sparky: Yeah, pretty good.

Mr.Maru: Say, what happened to the lamp?

Sparky: The cat slammed into it.

Mr.Maru: We don't have a cat.

Sparky: Yeah. We do. Remember?

Mr.Maru: I think you hit your head.

Sparky: No, I was having a race with the cat and she bashed into the lamp. I swear!

Mr.Maru: Bashed into the lamp? Or crashed into the lamp?

Sparky: I'm not really sure, but she broke it. She definitely broke it.

What is the difference between slam, crash, bash and other words that mean 'to strike'? There are several different words for this same meaning (to strike). Each word has a different nuance. Let's talk about each one and how we can use them.

Mr.Maru: What are you going to do today?

Sparky: I was thinking about going for a walk by 6.

Mr.Maru: Ok, how long are you going to be at home then?

Sparky: I'll be home by 4.

Mr.Maru: It's almost 4 now though.

Sparky: Yeah, I'm leaving at 4.

Mr.Maru: You mean you'll be home until 4.

Sparky: Right, I'll be home until 4. I'm leaving before the sun goes down.

Mr.Maru: Where were you yesterday?

Sparky: I was at the house all day. Why?

Mr.Maru: I called you at 1, but you didn't answer.

Sparky: I took a bath at 1. Sorry!

Mr.Maru: I called you again at 2 and you didn't answer.

Sparky: Oh, I listened to some soothing music while doing Tai Chi.

Mr.Maru: So, why didn't you answer the phone.

Sparky: I concentrated too hard, I guess.

Mr.Maru: Hey Sparky, do you want to go for a walk?

Sparky: No, I can't leave. I need to stay here, otherwise I can get my mail today.

Mr.Maru: I see. You mean you need to stay here so you can get the mail? The post woman will probably just put it in the mailbox.

Sparky: If I stay here I'll be able to chase the post woman which is something I won't otherwise be able to do.

Mr.Maru: Please don't scare the post woman. We just got a new one after you attacked the other guy.

Sparky: Where am I going to get my house-guarding training? I have to get it somewhere.

How do you use otherwise in a sentence? What are some common phrases that use otherwise? Let's go over some examples and rules.

Mr.Maru: That's a nice suit Sparky.
Sparky: Thank you.  I bought it yesterday.
Mr.Maru: Why are you dressed nicely?  It's the middle of summer.
Sparky: Well, since we have this weekly blog series are statuses have improved.  We need to start looking nicer.
Mr.Maru: I don't think so Sparky.  We don't have that many readers.
Sparky: Yeah, we do.  The fans like us.
Mr.Maru: Really?  Do you think I should buy a tie?
Sparky: Yes, of course! I think people will laugh at you if your dog is better-dressed than you.

What is plural of status?  Is the plural of status, statuses or states or neither?  Let's talk about some examples and explain the rules for this word.
